Andrew's horror novella, 'The Bathtub', is now available.

The Doe and the Dragon

This was my first attempt to both write a book solely set in the past, and to write historical fantasy.  I'd already partially tried a historical setting with 'Andraste's Blade,' but 'Blade' also about half set in the modern day, and was much darker and the feel was much more fantasy than 'The Doe and the Dragon's' horror.

'The Doe and the Dragon' was published in 2011, by Rogue Phoenix Press.

The story took several north Welsh myths and tied them together with a historical background to give a story of some 'Arthurian' characters set in the generation before he was born.  The main character, Einion Yrth (the Impetuous), has occasionally been linked with Uther Pendragon, possibly because of the 'Yrth' epithet.

My background is in north Welsh history and archaeology, so the history and setting came naturally to me and meant I was able to concentrate on telling the story instead of being preoccupied with getting the research right.

Here's the blurb:

Prince Einion, The Impetuous Warlord of Gwynedd, boasts that he fears nothing.  Deep inside, though, he is terrified of beautiful women and would rather face a hundred Saxon warriors than have to approach a pretty maiden.

Breena, a settler-girl, captures Einion’s heart when he comes across her in an enchanted valley.  His tongue dries and ties itself in knots, rendering him incapable of speech.  She runs away, fearing he is a spirit form the Otherworld --but the smitten prince vows to woo her.

When Breena is captured by Einion’s enemy, the prince must overcome sadistic raiders, religious intolerance, and an ancient, violent evil in his attempt to rescue her.  Only then can he try to win what he most desires-- the stunning woman who terrifies him more than any enemy he has faced on the battlefield.
